The UK summer may well be sizzling away this year, but there's always an excuse to get away from it all. At this time of year, one of our favourite places to jet off to is Greece. Whatever it is you're into, there's a bit of something for everyone in this Mediterranean jewel.
Take me to the party
If you're looking for a good time and you want to do it with a touch of style, look no further than Mykonos. Although it's historically had quite the reputation for being a party island, we can safely say it's no Magaluf.
Wandering round the enchanting white-washed streets of Mykonos Town, you'll find it exudes an elegance that's rarely matched in many other "party towns". Head down to Little Venice at sunset and enjoy a delicious cocktail at one of the seafront bars, such as Galleraki - we can't think of a better way to enjoy the sunset than with a good Mojito and the sea lapping at your feet. Then meander your way to dinner whilst exploring the exquisitely tasteful boutiques that sell an array of custom made jewellery, clothing and many other shiny things that will make your five minute walk to your Moussaka take more like two hours. Although we joke about Moussaka, Mykonos is no joke when it comes to dining out. It really is a foodie's paradise and we would recommend you try eating at as many spots as possible. Perhaps head to one of our faves, Funky Kitchen for some Octopus Carpaccio before heading out for a night on the tiles at any one of the many nightclubs - there are simply too many to chose from.
Sail the ocean blue
If partying on up in Mykonos isn't quite your scene, have no fear. The beauty of Greece is that as well as the mainland, it has an archipelago of islands, many of which aren't even on the tourist map. Therefore, one of the most adventurous and magical ways in which to enjoy your holiday is to boat hop around some of these enchanting land crops. You can fly to most tourist hot spots and from there you can hop around on ferries to most islands. Our favourites are Naxos, Paros and Santorini for a real balance of chilled down-time amongst stunning natural surroundings, with the opportunity to explore gorgeous little towns where you can saunter around the old sun-drenched streets and indulge in local cuisine.
Laid back bliss
If all this sounds like too much effort, we totally get it. Sometimes all we want is to head somewhere idyllic, put our feet up and enjoy being horizontal for a while; ideally on a beach, with a beer. If it's this type of escapism you're looking for, then we suggest bee-lining straight for Crete or Kefalonia. Forget Minotaurs and Captain Corelli's Mandolin, these two beautiful islands are bursting with luscious green hills and golden beaches. Here, you can find some of the most wonderful places to stay that will cater to an indulgently relaxing holiday. And if you do find you get itchy feet, there are plenty of places to explore, like the magical old town of Chania or the incredibly preserved old leper island of Elounda in Crete. And in Kefalonia, take a trip to the quaint little town of Fiskardo, where you can enjoy a delicious meal by the harbour and rent a boat for the afternoon to take in the imposing neighbouring island of Ithaca.
So you see, Greece really does have it all. And to top it off, they get on average 250 days of sunshine per year, making it the sunniest country in Europe. What more could you ask for?
